| View in browser Enterprise at Imperial - March Newsletter  A new wave of startup innovators I was delighted, but not surprised, to learn that Imperial has been named as the best university in Europe for aspiring entrepreneurs, based on the inclusion of 17 of the College’s students and alumni in Forbes’s 30 Under 30 list.   We are continually expanding our efforts to enable entrepreneurial thinking to flourish in our community, and we are grateful to our business partners for your support through coaching, mentoring, collaborating on support programmes, and helping connect our ventures to investors and customers.   This month’s newsletter is packed with examples of exciting technology startups from our community that are currently working with investors and corporate customers and have received significant investment. These include Monolith AI, which is developing machine learning tools to support the design of components such as car parts, and Bramble Energy, which is developing easier-to-manufacture fuel cells that could help drive a hydrogen revolution.   These companies are backed by research coming out of Imperial’s labs, the talent of Imperial’s outstanding researchers and students, and our support infrastructure – which received an endorsement this month from the West London Business Awards, which named our White City Incubator as incubator / accelerator of the year.   Working with university startups is a key way for corporates to enter new markets and stay abreast of emerging technologies, and this month we invite you to hear directly from Imperial’s newest generation of student entrepreneurs. Our flagship student entrepreneurship programme, Venture Catalyst Challenge, is holding its 2022 Grand Final on 24 March in South Kensington, and you are warmly invited to join us for it, in person or online, by registering at the link below.   Best wishes,   Dr Simon Hepworth Director of Enterprise Imperial College London Register to attend the Venture Catalyst Challenge 2022 Grand Final News Top uni in Europe for entrepreneurs   Imperial has been named the best university in Europe and the fifth best in the world for prospective entrepreneurs after 17 students or graduates appeared on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Incubator of the year   Imperial’s White City Incubator has won the Incubator / Accelerator / Coworking Space of the year 2022 in the West London Business Awards, and was shortlisted for Company of the Year, reflecting its continued success at supporting innovation in the pandemic era.   Fuel cell company raises £35m   Imperial fuel cell startup Bramble Energy has received a new round of investment for its fuel cells that can be manufactured using existing printed circuit board production lines. The fuel cells could be used to power transport and for other portable applications and help bring hydrogen power to the mainstream. AI-assisted design firm raises £8.5m   Imperial startup Monolith AI has raised £8.5m for its AI platform that helps engineers predict the performance of designs for components such as auto parts. The company has also returned to Imperial in a research partnership to develop AI for quickly assessing whether designs are manufacturable.   Soil analysis startup aids farming    Imperial startup FA Bio has made substantial progress following a seed investment in 2021 and has rebranded from FungiAlert. The company was founded to develop the tools that enable early detection of soil pathogens and provide growers with soil microbial analysis. Guide to West London innovators   A new publication celebrates Hammersmith & Fulham’s ‘Impact and Innovation 110’ – leading organisation in science, technology, creative and charitable sectors working across the West London borough. The publication includes Imperial and several startups that are part of the College’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.   Robotics founder tames dragons   Dr Chang Liu, former Imperial postdoc and founder of Extend Robotics, successfully pitched for £150,000 investment in the first episode of the latest series of Dragons’ Den.   Consultancy for battery prototyping   Tech startup About:Energy has launched by Imperial and University of Birmingham researchers to commercialise a unique modelling capability that will increase the speed of development of battery prototypes.   Partnership to boost cloud security   A new partnership between Imperial and the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) in Abu Dhabi aims to boost the security of cloud computing services by redesigning server hardware and software to build in security from the ground up. Justine Greening visits   The former Education Secretary Justine Greening visited Imperial’s White City Campus and toured several Imperial spaces for startups including the White City Incubator, scale up community Scale Space, a co-location facility the Translation & Innovation Hub. Upcoming events The Hesitant Entrepreneur 30 March   Data shows that becoming an entrepreneur is a choice influenced by society. Women are only half as likely as men to launch an enterprise.
