I’d like to begin this month’s update by offering a huge thanks to our friends from the business and investor communities for the support you’re giving us to translate research into world-changing innovations.
I’m delighted to report that Imperial has been assessed by the latest government-backed Research Excellence Framework (REF) as the top university in the UK for world-leading research and top in the Russell Group for the impact of our research on wider society.
The results of the REF are always massive news, especially to us in the higher education sector. But our performance is also a huge tribute to the commercial expertise you’ve provided to Imperial, which has helped researchers to address real-world industrial challenges and supported early-stage Imperial startups as they establish their commercial viability.
These efforts have made a major contribution to our chart-topping showing on what the REF calls ‘impact’, the measurable difference our research makes, for example, to treating diseases, improving the environment, and boosting the economy.
What better way to celebrate than by joining us this June for several events at which Imperial’s industrially focused researchers and students will showcase their ventures and technologies in fields such as medtech, cleantech and AI, alongside plenty of opportunities for discussion and networking.
Our June events include:
- A talk about joint research by Imperial and Bayer that is combining AI with medical imaging and genomic data to develop new cardiology treatments. (8 June, South Kensington. Register here).
- A startup showcase from Techcelerate, an accelerator that helps Imperial researchers test the market potential of their technology concepts in a range of sectors. (14 June, White City. Register here).
- The final of WE Innovate, our flagship entrepreneurship competition for women students (22 June, South Kensington. Register here).
- A startup showcase from the Imperial-led medical technology accelerator, MedTech SuperConnector (23 June, White City. Register here).
- Exclusively for members of Imperial Business Partners (IBP), a chance to discover Imperial Tech Foresight’s energy and computation scenarios for the year 2041 and what they mean for businesses. (8 June, White City. IBP members can register here).
I look forward to seeing you soon at some of these events – and do pass this on to any colleagues who might also be interested.
Best wishes,
Dr Simon Hepworth
