The science shaping society

A new home for scale-ups

Dear Imperial contact,

mperial is working with lab and office space specialists Sciopolis to launch a scale-up space at One Portal Way, Old Oak, that will help early-stage science and technology ventures scale while remaining in London. The new site, opening mid-2026, will host up to 30 scale-ups and is part of Imperial’s broader Old Oak Campus, which also includes housing and retail.

💊 A new platform could help develop weight loss drugs for oral use

The blockbuster weight loss drug semaglutide is one of many modern drugs based on peptides, molecules that serve as the building blocks of proteins. While peptides have great value for weight loss, oncology, and more, it is hard to produce them without huge chemical waste and to make them into oral medicines that aren’t broken down in the stomach. These challenges will be tackled by new peptide discovery and synthesis spinout Orthogonal Peptides using a technology platform from Imperial.

🫴 Wearable device aims to help stroke patients learn to move again

Stroke patients often face lengthy periods of rehabilitation while they learn to use their limbs again. Spinout Neubond aims to accelerate this using a device patients wear that detects attempted movements and provides physical feedback, helping them to retrain the neural pathways needed for movement.

🧗‍♀️A new hip implant will help women stay active

A new type of hip implant could expand access to hip resurfacing, a less invasive alternative to total hip replacement that has until now has been unavailable to women. Imperial spinout Embody Orthopaedic has recently gained a CE mark for the technology, which uses a ceramic coating to work better with the shape of women’s hips and help more patients stay active.
